Anaesthesiology & Critical Care
The Department of Anaesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine offers world-class patient care, the finest education for medical students and
residents, innovative research laboratories and an accomplished faculty. Each year, we provide coverage for more than 5,000 procedures in
multiple operating rooms.
Clinical anesthesiology began at Mass General in 1846 with the first public demonstration of the use of ether for surgery. Since that time, we have been at the forefront of outstanding patient care as a leading center of Anaesthesiology training. Our resident teaching program mentors trainees in a supportive environment, starting with total supervision and culminating in a mastery of all aspects of anesthesiology.
The department's research activities are driven by an outstanding faculty of independent thinkers and cover a wide range of activities, including cutting-edge investigation in critical care medicine, neurosciences, biomedical engineering, patient safety and simulation.
